This is part two of a series that starts with Bouncing Back from Failure: An Experiment. In that post, I set a challenge for myself to go to bed no later than 9 PM every night. The first seven days was relatively easy, but I had a couple acceptable misses in week 2.

Week 2

The first night to miss the 9 PM mark was Wednesday. The MidCamp organizer meeting went long, but we got a lot of good work done. This is something I expect to happen from time to time, so I cleared it with Alyscia in advance as an acceptable miss.

On Friday I slept in a cardboard box in downtown Champaign. This was part of a fundraiser called One Winter Night. With the help of 23 generous donors, I raised $1,367 for CU At Home, a local ministry that helps the homeless in Champaign. I had many good conversations and learned a lot about our friends without homes in town. I slept well but didn’t get to bed until after midnight.

All bundled up in front of my temporary home.

I turned it into a triangle to give me a little more insulation on the bottom. I also covered it with a tarp to keep the wind from blowing in the front and back.

Upcoming weeks

This week looks normal. I may go late for MidCamp planning again, but that should be my only possible miss.

Next week I’m going to be in San Francisco all week. It’s unreasonable to go to bed at 9 PM every night while I’m there – even 9 PM Pacific. I don’t want to lose my progress on the habit, so it feels like I should set some boundaries… but what?

Have a suggestion? Let me know!
